(DCNF)—Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett kicked off her U.S. Senate campaign Monday where a live rap performance trashed conservatives, President Donald Trump and departing Republican Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Crockett filed paperwork Monday to run for U.S. Senate against incumbent Republican Sen. John Cornyn and launched her bid at a campaign event billed as a “special announcement.” Rapper Cameron McCloud performed a rendition of “Ain’t Never Scared” before Crockett took to the stage. The song tried to portray her as fearless and mocked Republican voters.
“She ain’t never scared, and she ain’t never been. Who was willing to go toe to toe against the president? I can’t wrap my head around someone who votes Republican. She advocate for feeding kids,” McCloud said.
“They protect folks touching them. Trump invading his own country with an army. What a joke. We remember Pearl Harbor by illegally bombing boats. But y’all thought we wasn’t gonna do nothing, buddy, think again.”
At several points, the performer repeated that Crockett “ain’t never scared.”
“They only trying to scare out of running cause they think she’ll win. Listen, thought I told y’all we ain’t never scared. Now look who name on the docket. Got two words for every racist bigot. Jasmine Crockett,” McCloud added.
One verse appeared aimed at Greene.
“I hope my money goes. So side that isn’t trying to say affordability is a hope. She stand on business, all in toes. Texas dope. Don’t need no more. Bad built, bleached, blonde, butch bodies moving forward,” McCloud rapped.
During the same event, Crockett told supporters that grassroots organizing can flip Texas blue. She said Democratic victories depend on broad voter engagement rather than any single candidate and described her approach as “the JC way.”
“Texas turns blue. It won’t be because of any one candidate, but because of each and every one of you doing your part. Turning Texas blue is what I want to talk to y’all about today. Now, there are those that say ain’t no way we done tried it 50 kinds of ways,” Crockett told the crowd.
Crockett jumped into the race after months of publicly floating a Senate bid and insisting she would run if polling showed a clear path to victory. Her filing followed Democratic Senate candidate Colin Allred’s decision to suspend his campaign Monday morning.
Allred’s move toward a Dallas-area House bid gives Crockett a clearer path to the nomination, though she still faces a primary challenge from Texas state legislator James Talarico.
