(WND)—There’s a war going on behind Iran’s war to maintain its military power and pursue nuclear weapons.
The one to seize historic Christian churches in Tehran and shut down several faith-based organizations because they are “hostile” groups.
It is the American Center for Law and Justice that says the United Nations now has been summoned to act on behalf of the people’s rights.
It is, according to the report, the 150-year-old St. Peter Evangelical Church that was the breaking point for the latest dispute.
The Islamic Republic in Iran has seized the building and has adopted the official designation of several Christian groups as “hostile.”
“This isn’t just a false label – it’s the pretext Iran is using to shut these churches down, in direct violation of basic religious rights. We are taking action,” the organization confirmed in an online report.
The ACLJ has sent a letter to the United Nations Human Rights Council describing the attacks by the rogue Islamic regime.
“Unfortunately, the persecution of Christians in Iran is nothing new. For decades, Iranian Christians – particularly converts from Islam – have been tortured, interrogated, imprisoned, and even killed by the Iranian government. And just this past month, one of the last functioning Christian churches in Tehran was shut down as well,” the ACLJ reported.
Besides St. Peter’s, the government in Iran has taken over two schools and several church-owned residences.
“This historic sanctuary served as both a place of worship and a home to nearly 20 families. Following the seizure and subsequent threats from Iranian forces, those families were forced to flee,” the ACLJ said.
To the U.N., the legal team warned, “While restrictions on the freedom to manifest religion or belief may be prescribed by law when they ‘are necessary to protect public safety, order, health or morals, or the fundamental rights of others,’ restricting peaceful worship or shutting down a place of worship have no nexus to these exceptions.”
The ACLJ warned, “That is exactly what Iran is doing – restricting peaceful Christian worship simply because the Ayatollahs don’t like it.”
The ACLJ charges that there are several Christian satellite broadcasters who have been declared “hostile” and revealed that anyone cooperating with them, sharing their content, or even watching them, “can be prosecuted under national security and espionage laws.”
At least five Christians already have faced charges, it said.
“United Nations Special Rapporteurs have likewise issued a statement condemning Iran’s human rights violations, pointing out that at one point there were around 50 Protestant churches in Iran. Today, there are effectively none,” the report said.
The letter also demands the U.N. make sure Iran returns St. Peter Evangelical Church “to its rightful owner.”
