(DCNF)—Democratic Delaware Sen. Chris Coons said Friday that President Donald Trump has the power to end Russia’s war in Ukraine, but only if he reverses course and ramps up U.S. financial and military support for Kyiv.
In March, the U.S. Department of Defense said Trump had halted all military aid to Ukraine until the president can determine a good-faith commitment to peace from Ukrainian leaders. Appearing on ” Morning Joe,” Coons said Trump could end the war in Ukraine if he reversed course and sent more U.S. funding and military support to Kyiv to pressure Russia.
“One of the striking things about President Trump’s budget request for the military this year was it stripped out all funding for support for Ukraine. I’m the senior Democrat on defense appropriations,” Coons said. “And we’re working hard to make sure that those resources for intelligence sharing, for the purchase of our weapons systems by Europe and support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression remain a part of our posture with our allies in Europe.”
Coons accused Trump of appeasing Russian President Vladimir Putin while pressuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to surrender territory.
“He’s tried doing everything he can to give Putin what he wants, literally rolling out the red carpet for him in a meeting in Alaska now months ago. And he’s pushed and pushed and pushed Zelenskyy and the brave men and women of Ukraine to make concessions of territory,” Coons added. “Frankly, at this point, Putin’s response is blindingly clear. Night after night, Putin launches waves of drones and missiles at civilian targets.”
In November, Zelenskyy faced an issue that risked his authority and damaged his clean-government reputation. This, after Ukraine’s anti-graft agency probed his longtime associate Timur Mindich over alleged diversion of about $100 million from a state nuclear firm. Zelenskyy later moved to rein in the investigators despite not being personally named.
Zelenskyy defended his government’s record and pushed back against allegations that his administration interfered with anti-corruption efforts.
“Look, I’m focusing on the war. What about anti-corruption agencies? They do what they have to do. They have all their independence. Nobody is stopping there. They are checking what they have to do, and we are not stopping,” Zelenskyy said. “It doesn’t matter what person, close or not, we know them or not, or we don’t. They have to do their work. This is war. This is democracy in the same way. Yes, and we have to respect it.”
Despite the corruption issue, the U.S. Congress is moving forward with a compromise defense package that injects about $400 million in additional military aid for Ukraine as the war with Russia enters its fourth year. The president is continuously working to bring the war to an end. Zelenskyy met with Trump in Florida Sunday to review a proposed 20-point peace plan, after which Trump said they held follow-up calls with several European leaders during a joint press conference.
