(DCNF)—Democratic California Rep. Eric Swalwell said on Monday that the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol belongs in the same category as the nation’s darkest days—Pearl Harbor and 9/11.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries held a news conference Monday to announce Democratic appointments to the new Jan. 6 subcommittee. During the news conference, Swalwell said that the day marked one of the three most consequential dates in American history.
“Since the Civil War, what are the three most important dates in American history? December 7, 1941, September 11, and January 6. The last two, I didn’t even have to give you the years, because they are seared into our memories,” Swalwell said.
Swalwell claimed President Donald Trump pardoned “insurrectionists” and emboldened violence in his name. He accused Trump of turning law enforcement officers into villains, targeting investigators and pressuring institutions to downplay the events of Jan. 6.
“Donald Trump has pardoned all the insurrectionists, telling the country whatever crime they commit, even if you kill somebody and it’s in his name, you walk. Donald Trump has made villains of the cops who tried to stop them, even those cops who died,” Swalwell said. “He’s gone after those who have investigated him or helped impeach him over January 6, and he’s even forced the Smithsonian to whitewash and take his name off the January 6 impeachment exhibit.”
Swalwell said Americans must reject conspiracy theories about both 9/11 and Jan. 6.
“And here’s why we didn’t buy the 9-11 crazy talk then or the January 6 lies now, because we saw them with our own eyes. No matter your political party, our job now is to make sure that we, the people, always keep those eyes open, that we not accept falsehoods, even from our friends, and that we always choose the truth,” Swalwell added.
Democrats’ pick to join Swalwell on the new committee, Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett, has faced criticism for engaging in the very behavior Swalwell denounced. Crockett has drawn scrutiny for floating conspiracy theories, including an unfounded claim that Trump’s own supporters attempted to assassinate him.
