Ninety-five men with no legal right to be in this country were sitting behind the wheels of commercial trucks in Arizona this month. They were not lost. They were licensed. Most of those papers came from the same two states that have spent years treating a commercial driver’s license like a participation trophy.
Fox News Digital reports that a multi-agency operation in Border Patrol’s Yuma Sector, running August 10 through 14, arrested 95 illegal alien truck drivers. Every one of them held a state-issued commercial driver’s license.
Seventy-six of those cards came from California. Six came from New York. The rest were sprinkled across a handful of other states that never should have handed an 80,000-pound rig to a man the federal government does not recognize as lawfully present.
This was not a paperwork sweep. Agents also broke up two human-smuggling events, arrested four smugglers, and pulled 17 smuggled aliens out of the pipeline. They seized 74 pounds of methamphetamine and 169 pounds of marijuana. In all, 143 suspects from 18 countries were taken off the road. The trucks were not just hauling freight. Some of them were hauling people and poison.
“We are committed to protecting our citizens from all international threats, whether that is from unlicensed or untrained drivers, or transnational criminal organizations engaged in human or drug trafficking,” Acting Chief Patrol Agent Dustin Caudle said.
Border crossings have collapsed under President Trump. Encounters fell from more than 144,000 in December 2024 to about 33,000 in July. The cartels noticed. They did not go home. They climbed into the cab.
The Licenses Came From Sanctuary Factories
California and New York did not stumble into this. They built it. Federal audits found California had issued tens of thousands of non-domiciled commercial licenses that did not match a driver’s lawful presence. New York’s sample was worse. More than half of the records reviewed there failed basic federal rules, and the state sat on more than 32,000 of those credentials before Washington started yanking highway money.
The results left the Southwest and showed up everywhere else. Indiana authorities stopped and prosecuted 283 illegal alien truck drivers in a 90-day stretch, many of them carrying California or New York CDLs. ICE’s Operation Highway Sentinel grabbed more than 100 illegal alien truckers on California highways after fatal wrecks tied to those same licenses. Oklahoma troopers found an Indian illegal alien holding a New York Class A card that listed his first name as “NO NAME GIVEN.”
That is not a clerical typo. That is a state telling the rest of the country it will not even demand a name before it puts a stranger in a tractor-trailer.
Families already paid the bill. Harjinder Singh, an illegal alien with a California CDL, is accused of an illegal U-turn on the Florida Turnpike that killed three people. Bekzhan Beishekeev, an illegal alien from Kyrgyzstan with a Pennsylvania CDL, is accused of crossing into oncoming traffic in Indiana and killing four.
The Washington Examiner has catalogued the pattern. Sanctuary governors treated the commercial license as another benefit. The highway became the enforcement zone because the DMV would not do its job.

“Moving forward, unqualified foreign drivers will be unable to get a license to operate an 80,000-pound big rig,” Duffy said. “Under President Trump’s leadership, we are putting the safety of the driving public first. From enforcing English language standards to holding fraudulent carriers accountable, we will continue to attack this crisis on our roads head-on.”
Operation Highway Shield has already been running that fight in the Midwest. Joint stops this summer produced 51 immigration detentions, dozens of English-language violations, hundreds of unsafe trucks pulled out of service, and nearly a million dollars in stolen freight recovered.
The administration is also pushing veterans into those seats through the Freedom Haulers program. That is the correct order of things. An American who served this country should not lose a lane to a man who broke into it.
Yuma’s haul is one week in one sector. It is also a verdict on a decade of blue-state policy. California and New York printed the cards. Cartels filled the trailers. Border agents had to do what motor vehicle offices refused to do.
If a state will license an illegal alien to drive a rolling bomb down an interstate, it should not be shocked when the federal government takes the keys.
