Illinois Governor JB Pritzker went on CNN this week and called the Democratic Socialists of America’s primary victories “the recipe for winning in 2026 and beyond.” Senator Chris Murphy told Meet the Press he wants a “big tent party.” Senator Raphael Warnock says socialists and communists are welcome inside it. One after another, elected Democrats are vouching for an organization that most Americans — including most rank-and-file Democrats — have never actually read.
That ends here. What follows is not commentary about the DSA. It is what the DSA says about itself, in its own published platform documents, organized so that any American can see precisely what the “big tent” now shelters. The organization claims more than 100,000 members, holds sway over a growing bloc of congressional nominees, and just watched its candidates unseat multi-term Democrat incumbents in New York and Colorado. Its platform is not a fringe wish list. It is the governing vision of the fastest-growing force inside the Democratic Party.
Three Documents, One Agenda
To be precise about sourcing, because precision matters: the DSA’s positions currently live in three layered documents. The first is the short, public-facing “Workers Deserve More!” program for 2025-2026, the glossy pamphlet leading with Medicare for All, housing, childcare, and a 32-hour work week. The second is the full DSA Political Platform, the detailed document that has lived on the organization’s own website — this is where the provisions you have never heard a Democrat read aloud are written down. The third is a rebooted platform adopted by the DSA’s National Political Committee last month, reported in detail by City Journal, with its full text set to debut at the DSA’s “Socialists Summit” in Chicago at the end of July.
The pamphlet is the sales brochure. The platform is the contract. Every item below comes from the contract.
Abolish the Police, Empty the Prisons
The platform does not call for police reform. It calls, in its own words, for abolishing “the carceral forces of the state — from prisons and police themselves, to their manifestations in all forms throughout society.” The DSA maintains a national Abolition Working Group whose first listed demand is defunding the police by cutting budgets annually toward zero. Not reallocating. Zero.
The specifics go further than even most progressives realize:
- Free all people from involuntary confinement. Read that plainly. The platform contains no carve-out for murderers, rapists, or traffickers.
- Disarm law enforcement officers — including police and private security.
- End all misdemeanor offenses and cut funding to prosecutors’ offices.
- End pre-trial detention, civil commitment, and imprisonment for parole violations.
- Remove all police, public and private, from every school, college, university, hospital, and care facility in America.
- Decriminalize the drug trades, the sex trades, homelessness, and squatting. Yes, squatting — the occupation of property you do not own.
Notably, the platform rejects even the standard liberal reform toolkit — electronic monitoring, problem-solving courts, restorative justice programs — as unacceptably “carceral in nature.” When DSA co-chair Ashik Siddique told Fox News this week that the goal is merely to make police and prisons “less necessary,” he was performing a translation. The source document says abolition, and says it repeatedly.
Rewrite the Constitution Itself
The platform calls for a second constitutional convention to draft, in its words, the founding documents of a new socialist democracy. Under this heading the DSA demands the abolition of the United States Senate, the abolition of the Electoral College, the addition of Supreme Court seats explicitly to break the conservative majority, and limits on the Court’s power of judicial review itself.
The June 2026 reboot goes further still, calling for replacing the President and the Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress. Even the DSA’s own leadership found that one contentious; it reportedly passed the National Political Committee by a razor-thin margin.
The platform also demands voting rights for non-citizens and an end to all disenfranchisement based on criminal conviction — language that, as written, includes those currently serving sentences.
Open the Borders, Abolish ICE
This section requires little interpretation because the DSA has supplied its own label. At its 2019 national convention, the organization passed a resolution titled, in capital letters, OPEN BORDERS — supporting what it called the uninhibited transnational free movement of people.
The current platform operationalizes it: abolish ICE and CBP, end all deportations and enforcement actions, end immigration detention, demilitarize the border, end E-Verify so that legal employment is available regardless of immigration status, extend taxpayer-funded healthcare to non-citizens, and grant immediate amnesty to every illegal immigrant in the country. The 2026 reboot reaffirms universal amnesty.
Abolish Capitalism — Their Words, Not Mine
Defenders of the DSA insist that “democratic socialist” means little more than Denmark with better branding. The platform forecloses that defense. It states outright that the organization fights for the abolition of capitalism, and the mechanism is spelled out in detail:
- Social ownership of all major industry and infrastructure.
- Nationalize the banks — the platform’s stated plan is not to break up the big banks but to bring them under working-class control.
- Nationalize and socialize insurance, real estate, and finance, along with utilities, telecommunications, media companies, and internet providers.
- Nationalize fossil fuel producers in order to phase them out, with no new oil and gas projects authorized — while the family down the street is already struggling to fill the tank.
- Socialize the agricultural system.
- Limit maximum wages. Buried in the corporate-regulation section is an income ceiling — a legal cap on what any American is permitted to earn.
Whatever one calls that program, it is not Denmark, which remains a market economy with private banks, private industry, and no income ceiling. It is the command economy Americans spent the twentieth century watching fail, at the cost of roughly one hundred million lives.
Dismantle “Empire”
The platform’s foreign policy section describes the United States as the heart of a global capitalist empire that has inflicted suffering on billions — which is why you now hear the word “empire” flowing so freely from DSA-aligned candidates and activists. The demands that follow from that premise:
- Immediate withdrawal from NATO and closure of all US military bases overseas.
- End all sanctions on regimes including Cuba, Venezuela, and Iran — the latter demand arriving while American sailors are being targeted in the Strait of Hormuz.
- Renounce nuclear weapons.
- Abolish USAID, the National Endowment for Democracy, and Voice of America.
- End all military aid to Israel, embrace the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement, and — in the 2026 reboot — explicitly name Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state.
- Support “self-determination and full sovereignty” for Hawai’i and other territories — a provision that, read plainly, contemplates the secession of an American state.
It is worth adding, as documented fact rather than insinuation, that the DSA’s international work includes a warm relationship with the Chinese Communist Party, including organizational trips to China and briefings promoting the message that China is not our enemy. The platform demands an end to any aggressive economic, diplomatic, or military posture toward Beijing.
The Family, the Children, and the Gender Regime
For parents, this may be the section that matters most. The platform demands that trans-identifying minors be able to access so-called gender-affirming care without parental consent. It guarantees hormones and surgeries, at public expense, to all incarcerated people who request them, and houses prisoners according to gender identity rather than biological sex. Its stated goal is to end the state’s recognition of the gender binary altogether — the legal erasure of male and female as categories, a matter on which Genesis 1:27 has already ruled.
The platform further demands the full nationwide decriminalization of prostitution, including repeal of FOSTA/SESTA — anti-sex-trafficking legislation that passed the Senate 97 to 2. It calls for abortion free and on demand with the repeal of all legal restrictions, meaning no limit at any stage. And it demands that all privileges afforded to married couples be extended to “all consenting partnerships.”
City Journal reads the 2026 reboot’s parallel language about ending restrictions on marriage as presumably entailing the legalization of polygamy. A discernment note is warranted here: that inference is City Journal’s, not the platform’s explicit text. But the platform’s own words — all consenting partnerships — are printed above, and readers may draw their own conclusions about what arrangements that phrase declines to exclude.
Two Vocabularies, One Movement
Set the documents side by side and the strategy becomes visible. To the cameras, the movement speaks of affordability, working people, and a big tent. On paper, it speaks of abolition, nationalization, amnesty, and a new constitution. Zohran Mamdani ran on freezing rents and free buses; the platform behind him calls for emptying the prisons and exiting NATO.
The gap between the sales language and the source language is not an accident. It is the mechanism. And Democrats who wave the movement through under the banner of the big tent are vouching for the brochure while the contract sits unread — though some, to their credit, have started reading. James Carville is now openly using the word “schism,” saying there are things he cannot share a tent with. He is discovering, late, what the documents have said all along.

Scripture gives the standard for moments like this one: “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21). The proving is now done — the documents are open, the words are theirs, and the record is public. What remains is for Americans, Democrats included, to decide whether what they find there is something they can hold fast to, or something they were never meant to see.
