(Just The News)—President Trump says that a trade deal could be reached with India, but he is unsure about a deal with Japan.

Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Tuesday that he believed India was ready to lower tariffs on U.S. imports, which could allow an agreement to prevent the 26% tariff rate he announced on April 2, before pausing it until July 9, Reuters reported.

“Right now, India doesn’t accept anybody in. I think India is going to do that,” said Trump, referring to agreeing to a U.S. deal. “If they do that, we’re going to have a deal for less, much less tariffs.”

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had told Fox News earlier regarding a trade deal with India, “We are very close with India.”

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said Monday, “We are in the middle – hopefully more than the middle – of a very intricate trade negotiation. Obviously, my hope would be that we bring it to a successful conclusion. I cannot guarantee it, because there’s another party to that discussion.”
